Vodafone Qatar to launch eSIM technology on 28 September

Mubasher: Vodafone Qatar on Thursday has announced that it will launch eSIM on Friday, 28 September to become one of the first operators in the region providing this cutting-edge technology.

The telecom company will launch the new technology in cooperation with Apple and other vendors in a bid to activate it in the very near future, according to the company’s statement to the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE).

The eSIM is an electronic SIM-Card embedded inside a compatible device, and there are no physical SIM cards involved and no physical swapping over required by the user.

Users of the new eSIM will find that it is easier to switch network, or switch between personal and business numbers, the statement showed.

The fresh technology will also enable more connected devices simply because eSIMs don't require much space inside a device, enabling compact devices like fitness trackers to have stand-alone connectivity in a way they just weren't able to before.

“Vodafone Qatar has a rich history of bringing leading innovations and technology to the country; launching eSIM is a continuation of this. We see many advantages of this new technology and our customers in Qatar will be some of the first globally to benefit from it.” Sheikh Hamad Abdulla Al Thani, CEO of Vodafone Qatar, said.

For the first half of 2018, the telecom firm recorded QAR 49 million in profits, versus a net loss of QAR 131 million in H1-17.

By 12:45 pm Qatar time, Vodafone Qatar’s stock declined 1.15% at QAR 8.61.
