Cairo - Mubasher: TAQA Arabia, an Egypt-based full-service energy and utilities provider, has inaugurated a 5 megawatt (MW) PV solar plant in Somabay, a touristic destination situated on the Red Sea coast.
The project aims to expand the use of renewables in generating electricity to decrease the dependence on conventional electricity at a reduced cost and a higher efficiency and cut the carbon footprint, according to a press release on Tuesday.
TAQA Arabia and Abu Soma Tourism Development Company also reached a new agreement to develop a water desalination and treatment plant using the solar energy generated from the new plant.
The Executive Chairman of TAQA Arabia, Khaled Abu Bakr, said: "The new venture is another step towards the country's vision of diversifying the energy sources and expanding the use of renewable energy resources."
Meanwhile, the CEO of Abu Soma Tourism Development Company, Ibrahim El-Missiri, commented: "This project will greatly contribute to the expansion of the energy spectrum in the tourism sector to include renewable resources, all of these endeavors align with Egypt’s vision to explore and diversify the energy resources."
