Mubasher: Trade exchange between Qatar and Japan surged 23% to $16 billion in 2018, against $13.1 billion in the prior year, Qatar Chamber’s (QC) chairman said.

Exports of the top trading partner for Qatar included vehicles, electronics, steel and iron products, Khalifa Bin Jassim Al Thani said on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Qatar-Japan business forum held in Tokyo.

Japan is also the top liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer from Qatar, Al Thani noted.

Qatar has 27 wholly-owned Japanese companies mostly in the energy sector, while there are about 24 Qatari-Japanese firms in Qatar with investments worth $3 billion, the top official added.

Trade surplus between Qatar and Japan rose 35% year-on-year to JPY 1.48 trillion ($13.5 billion) in 2018, from JPY 1.09 trillion ($9.9 billion), according to the Japanese Ministry of Finance's (MoF) monthly bulletin.
