Mobility substation 80% complete, to operate in August – DEWA

Dubai – Mubasher: The Mobility substation is expected to be completed by the end of August, a press release stated, citing the managing director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

Construction for the 132/11 kV substation Mobility started on 1 July 2015 with a total cost of AED 173 million, of which AED 80 million were allocated for the plant and AED 93.6 million for the cables. The station will have a conversion capacity of 150 MVA

Mobility is one of the three substations implemented by DEWA within the Expo 2020 Dubai Park; the other two substations run under the name Sustainability and Opportunity. Collectively, the substations are estimated to cost AED 420 million and include 45 kilometres of high-voltage 132 kV cables.

“DEWA has also assigned AED 3 billion to clean-energy-related projects to support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, 25% by 2030, and 75% by 2050,” Al Tayer said.

Sustainability will start operating in October 2017, while Opportunity will follow in December 2017. DEWA is also working on a project to extend major water transport networks, pumping stations, and distribution networks at an estimated cost of AED 515 million.

Commenting on DEWA’s initiatives and projects, Al Tayer stated: “Shams Dubai will contribute power from solar arrays installed on Expo 2020’s buildings, and three different types of electric vehicle charging stations will be provided from the Green Charger initiative. Through the Smart Applications through the Smart Meters and Grids initiative, DEWA is also building a smart grid. This will be the first network in the world to cover generation, transmission, and distribution systems.”
