Italy’s Eni targets new investment opportunities in Iraq

Mubasher: Italian oil giant Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi has met with Iraq's deputy prime minister of energy affairs Thamir Al Ghadhban to conduct talks over cooperation between the two parties and countries.

The top officials discussed “future opportunities and development investments that will further strengthen Eni’s relationship with [Iraq]” as well as progress on social projects, such as healthcare, education, and access to clean drinking water, currently underway in Basra, the Italian oil firm said in a statement.

Moreover, Descalzi pointed to “potential synergies” connected to energy projects in Iraq.

Founded in 2009, Eni Iraq B.V has become one of the oil-rich Arab nation’s main oil operators with the ramp up of the Zubair field development project. The Italian oil firm’s subsidiary operates 475,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil equivalent in Iraq.

Since 2015, oil output in Zubair field, located in the southern Iraq region of Basra, rose by more than 100%.

In addition, construction in the new 380 megawatt (MW) power plant in Zubair field is in the final stages.

In January, Eni signed several exploration deals with Oman and Bahrain, in addition two concession agreements to acquire a 70% stake in offshore exploration areas in Abu Dhabi.
