Fertiglobe partners with TA’ZIZ to join blue ammonia project in Ruwais

UAE - Mubasher: TA’ZIZ has signed an agreement for Fertiglobe to join the blue ammonia production project at TA’ZIZ, the new chemicals production hub currently under development at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.

The agreement depends on Abu Dhabi National Oil Company's (ADNOC) experience in carbon capture and storage, and the ammonia capabilities of Fertiglobe to develop MENA's first large-scale blue ammonia project, according to a press release on Tuesday.

The project is located at TA’ZIZ Industrial Chemicals Zone, adjacent to the Ruwais Industrial Complex, which will supply the project with hydrogen and nitrogen feedstocks.

The facility’s capacity will be up to 1 million tonnes per annum.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, Fertiglobe is a joint venture between OCI and ADNOC, with respective ownership stakes of 58% and 42%.

The UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said: "As we continue to grow our manufacturing base in Ruwais, the UAE is well-placed to meet increasing global demand for this new fuel while strengthening our position as a world-scale chemicals and industrial hub and top destination for local and international investment."

Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of OCI N.V. and CEO of Fertiglobe, Nassef Sawiris, commented: "It [partnership with ADNOC] helps grow our low carbon and Clean Fuels product offering, which includes our fast-growing biofuels business, further builds on our recently announced 365,000 tonnes per annum blue ammonia capability in Texas, and leverages OCI’s and Fertiglobe’s globally leading position in ammonia."

It is noteworthy to mention that in May, ADNOC announced its intention to construct a world-scale blue ammonia production facility in Ruwais in Abu Dhabi to contribute to the UAE's efforts to create local and international hydrogen value chains.
