Etihad, Air Arabia collaborate to establish Abu Dhabi’s 1st low-cost carrier

UAE – Mubasher: Etihad Aviation Group and Air Arabia on Wednesday announced they have signed an agreement to launch ‘Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’, the first low-cost carrier in Abu Dhabi.

Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate to form an independent joint venture company that will operate as a low-cost passenger airline with its hub in Abu Dhabi International Airport, according to a press release.

The new JV will boost the growing low-cost travel market segment in the region and contribute to Etihad Airways’ services from Abu Dhabi, the two airlines indicated.

Tony Douglas, group CEO of Etihad Aviation Group, said: “This exciting partnership supports our transformation programme and will offer our guests a new option for low-cost travel to and from Abu Dhabi, supplementing our own services. We look forward to the launch of the new airline in due course”.

Adel Al Ali, group CEO of Air Arabia, said: “This step demonstrates the strength of the UAE aviation sector and serves the vision driving its growth. We look forward to a successful partnership and the launch of the new carrier”.

The new company will be based in Abu Dhabi with a board of directors comprising members nominated by Etihad and Air Arabia and it will adopt the low-cost business model.
