Egypt seeks to invest EGP 37bn in railroad safety

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is planning to implement projects worth EGP 37 billion to modernise the signalling system along 1,869 kilometres (km) of railroad tracks, Egypt's transport minister Kamel El-Wazir announced on Thursday.

El-Wazir noted that these projects come alongside with the project to upgrade the signals of the 208-km Cairo – Alexandria line at Kafr El-Dawar, according to a ministry statement.

Being developed under the supervision of Spain's Thales company, the Cairo – Alexandria line was introduced to the electronic interlocking system (EIS), which was replaced with the existing mechanical system to ensure the highest standards of safety.

The minister of transport further remarked that 74% of the project with 19 main towers and 14 peripheral towers has been completed.
