Cairo - Mubasher: The Egyptian minister of petroleum said that the government will not apply the smart card system in gasoline distribution.
Many loopholes could allow the card to be a tool that creates two prices for the same commodities, as well as the return of monopolies, minister Tarek Elmollla said in a press conference on Wednesday, as reported by the Middle East News Agency (MENA).
The minister also revealed plans to increase fuel quality, introducing Octane 92 as an alternative to Octane 80, whilst also encouraging the shift towards the Octane 95.
The government seeks to reduce consumptions, the minister added, noting that the consumption of gasoline and diesel were reduced by 4% and 5%, respectively.
The petroleum ministry recently announced raising fuel prices, as Octane 95 reached EGP 7.75 per litre, while the price of Octane 92 increased to EGP 6.75 per litre from EGP 5.
Octane 80 and diesel fuel were both increased to EGP 5.50 per litre, respectively.
