Egypt’s exports of gold, precious stones rise 37% YoY in January

Egypt’s exports of gold and precious stones increased 37 percent year-on-year in January to record $339 million, compared to $248 million in January 2017, a report by the General Organization for Export and Import Control showed.

The report said that Egypt's exports of jewelry and precious stones to Turkey increased by 152 percent for the first time in January to register $23 million, compared to $9 million a year earlier.

Egyptian exports to Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, recorded $3 million in January 2017, compared to a mere $2,000 in January 2016.

Palestine also came among the countries importing gold and jewelry from Egypt, with is imports recording $43,000 in January 2017, compared to $2,000 in 2016.

Germany and the United States’ imports of gold and Jewelry from Egypt in January 2018 stood at $37,000 and $6,000 respectively, the report said.

As for Egypt's exports of marble and granite in January, they dropped by seven percent from 217,884 tons in January 2017 to 157,586 tons in January 2018.

China emerged as the top importer of Egyptian marble and granite, followed by Libya, Saudi Arabia, Britain and Northern Ireland.

The report added that Egypt started exporting marble and granite to 12 countries for the first time, including Mozambique, Switzerland, Hungary, Niger, Puerto Rico, Sweden and Costa Rica.
