Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian electricity ministry is in talks with a number of international companies to execute wind power projects with capacities of up to 1,800 megawatts at a cost of around EUR 2 billion.
The anticipated projects will be implemented under the Build, Own and Operate (BOO) scheme, Almal News reported, citing official sources.
Investors will set up and finance the projects, while the electricity ministry will purchase the generated power, sources added.
The projects include the establishment of 600-megawatt wind farms under independent power producer (IPP) scheme in partnership with Elsewedy Electric, they indicated.
The ministry is also negotiating with Gamesa Spain to build a 120-megawatt wind plant, a Saudi Arabian company to set up a 120-megawatt wind station, and a European entity to construct a 500-megawatt wind plant.
The ministry is getting ready to offer other 460-megawatt projects in bids for international and local firms.
Egypt’s total generation of wind power hits around 1,010 megawatts, about 460 megawatts were added after 2014.
The ministry is seeking to close its deal with Germany’s Siemens Power Generation Services, upon which 2,000-megawatt wind farms shall be built, the sources noted.
The most populous Arab country is planning to generate 20% renewable energy of total generated power by 2022.
