Egypt inaugurates $15m Luxor wastewater treatment plant expansion

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Rania El-Mashat, inaugurated the expansion of El-Hobail wastewater treatment plant in Luxor.

The expansion will increase the capacity of the project by 36,000 cubic metres per day from the current 26,000 at a cost of $15 million, El-Mashat added in a statement on Sunday.

The project is part of a $450 million deal signed between the international cooperation ministry and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to develop water and wastewater sectors in Egypt.

The expansions will enable the plant to serve 250,000 residents, El-Mashat added, noting that the plant will serve about 332,000 people by 2023.

The USAID’s cooperation portfolio in Egypt has registered more than $30 billion since 1978.
