Egypt aims to secure 20m COVID-19 vaccine doses

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian cabinet approved to authorise the Ministers of Finance and Health and Population to take the necessary measures to provide 20 million doses of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine.

The government decided to contract with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, to secure the required vaccines, according to a statement on Wednesday.

The Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, warned that the number of COVID-19 cases are increasing in the current period, noting that Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria have the highest rates of infections.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for use by the UK government, while Moderna applied to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorise its COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.

Both Pfizer-BioNTech and US biotech firm Moderna have announced inital findings of over 90% effectiveness, an unexpectedly high rate, in trials of their vaccines.
