Egypt-KSA electricity interconnection comes into force in 2021

Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is currently working with the MENA region countries on the electricity linkage projects as Egypt’s electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia will come into force in 2021, Egypt’s electricity minister Mohamed Shaker told MENA.

The joint project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia will start through electric linkage lines of a 3000-megawatt power supply system on 500 kilovolts, Shaker added.

Egypt is actively participating in all the region’s electricity interconnection projects as it is electrically connected with both Jordan and Libya, he highlighted.

He further noted that Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cyprus and Greece to interconnect electrically, which will make Egypt a central hub for electricity linkage between three continents.

Egypt is currently studying electricity interconnection with the African countries to benefit from the hydropower in Africa, he indicated.

Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection project includes the extension of a 20-kilometre submarine cable, with a capacity of up to 3000 megawatts, over the Gulf of Aqaba.
