Egypt, Jordan plan fourfold increase in power link capacity

Egypt and Jordan are moving forward with plans to raise the capacity of their shared electricity interconnection from 500 megawatts to 2,000 megawatts, a step aimed at bolstering energy security and creating new avenues for cross-border power trade.

The announcement came during the meetings of the Joint Higher Committee, chaired by the prime ministers of both nations.

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Asmat, said the upgraded project will boost the two countries’ ability to meet growing domestic demand and pave the way for electricity exports to other markets.

He stressed the strong coordination already in place in the energy sector, citing Egypt’s support to Jordan during past crises through gas supplies and LNG regasification services.

Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Kharabsheh, underscored the significance of the expansion for both power grids, confirming that cooperation will continue in natural gas and LNG operations as part of broader regional energy integration.

Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Yarab Al-Qudah, said the interconnection upgrade is part of a wider plan to strengthen bilateral economic ties, which also includes an investment forum and trade exhibitions set to take place before the end of the year.

The committee’s discussions extended to transport, integrated manufacturing, real estate development, and labor cooperation. Jordanian Minister of Labor Khaled Al-Bakkar announced that Jordan’s labor market will remain open to Egyptian workers, with measures in place to help regularize their status.

The Egypt–Jordan electricity link is seen as a strategic asset, enabling the exchange of surplus power, enhancing grid stability, and serving as a foundation for future integration of Arab electricity networks to secure supplies and expand regional energy trade.
