Dubai opens DEWA’s smart grid station in Al Ruwayyah

Dubai – Mubasher: Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, has inaugurated Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA’s) smart grid station (SGS) in Al Ruwayyah, Dubai.

The new station supports the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE's vice president, prime minister, and Dubai's ruler, to make Dubai the world's smartest and happiest city through the Smart Dubai Initiative.

The station, which is part of DEWA’s efforts to implement technologies which link smart buildings for the exchange of information, was built in collaboration with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

It will work on improving energy and water efficiency and optimise renewable energy in smart cities.

The SGS also contributes to slash loads, especially at peak times; peak shift, and the reduction of water consumption.

It comprises a 200-kilowatt photovoltaic solar power production system, a 9-kilowatt wind turbine, and a 500-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery energy storage system, which stores energy for later use.

The smart station also includes over 2,000 sensors based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and smart meters distributed throughout the facility to monitor power and water demand data in real-time.

“We are working to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world, as well as the objectives of UAE Centennial 2071, UAE Vision 2021, and the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city and for the Dubai Government to be a pioneering and excellent government,” Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, commented.
