UAE - Mubasher: The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has inked an agreement with the International REC Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard) to become the sole I-REC Standard Accredited Issuer in Abu Dhabi.
The I-REC Standard is a non-profit organisation that offers a tracking Standard for renewable energy attributes, including the source of electricity generation and environmental indicators, according to a press release on Wednesday.
The agreement with the DoE allows for the first time for issuance of RECs for power generated from nuclear energy, among other technologies, which will add value to the emirate especially with the launch of the Barakah peaceful nuclear power plant.
In line with the I-REC Standard requirements, the DoE has set a regulatory policy to put local implementation regulations and determine the characteristics and principles of a clean energy certification scheme in Abu Dhabi.
The Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, said: "With increasing recognition of the impacts of climate change and a growing demand from businesses and individuals in Abu Dhabi for sustainability products, the DoE’s agreement with I-REC Standard is timely and important."
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the I-REC Standard Foundation, Jared Braslawsky, commented: "We look forward to years of cooperation and support in growing a market for trading in clean and renewable energy certificates in the region. All the parties are looking to the future with the possibility of certification of other energy and non-energy attributes including CCUS and Hydrogen and expect other relevant developments around these upcoming focuses."
