Canada to continue supporting human rights globally – Foreign Minister

Riyadh – Mubasher: Canada will always support human rights across the world, including women’s rights, Canadian foreign minister Chrystia Freeland has said.

Canada will always “stand up for” human rights across the globe, Freeland reiterated during a meeting with German diplomats in Berlin, without Saudi Arabia by name.

The minister said that her country is looking forward to “Germany's support in defending human rights.”

Freeland’s statement came after a spat brewing between Saudi Arabia and the North American country earlier in August.

The dispute occurred after the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled its ambassador in Canada Naif bin Bandir Alsudairy and gave Canadian ambassador in the oil-rich kingdom Dennis Horak 24 hours to leave after Canada criticised the arrest of civil society activists.

The GCC nation also stopped booking flights to Toronto, along with suspending the Saudi-Canadian Business Council's activities and halting all medical treatment programmes with Canada.
