Abu Dhabi – Mubasher: Aldar Properties is set to become the first developer in the MENA region to implement hydrogen-based steel rebar in a development project, according to a press release.
Supplied by EMSTEEL Building Materials, the steel will lower carbon emissions during the construction of Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque in Yas Island.
Spanning a 1,595 square meters floor area and capacity for over 850 worshippers, the mosque aims to achieve LEED Zero Carbon certification, reaching net zero carbon emissions in production and energy use through clean energy deployment.
This partnership will accelerate the industrial transition towards sustainable construction, creating demand for sustainable materials in the region.
It will also generate mutual value by recirculating the benefits within the UAE economy as part of the National In-Country Value (ICV) program.
Salwa Al Maflahi, Executive Director, Sustainability and Community Outreach at Aldar, said: “As we transition to low-carbon construction, green steel enables us to reduce embodied carbon at scale, without compromising structural integrity or design ambition.”
“Our partnership with EMSTEEL marks a bold step forward in accelerating the decarburization of our supply chain and delivering on our net-zero ambitions. This is a game changer for sustainable real estate development,” Al Maflahi noted.
In the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, Aldar’s net profits jumped by 22% to AED 1.90 billion from AED 1.57 billion in Q1-24. Meanwhile, EMSTEEL recorded net profits valued at AED 86.28 million.
