ADNOC, Fertiglobe sell blue ammonia to INPEX in Japan

UAE - Mubasher: The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has sold a cargo of blue ammonia to INPEX company in Japan to be used for power generation applications, in partnership with Fertiglobe.

The sale is ADNOC’s third blue ammonia shipment to Japan in 2021, supporting the development of new UAE-Japan blue ammonia supply chains, according to a press release on Wednesday.

ADNOC and the Japanese company have a longstanding partnership, with INPEX's participation in a number of ADNOC’s upstream concessions in addition to its partnership with ADNOC and Intercontinental Exchange Inc to launch ICE Futures Abu Dhabi.

INPEX has recently announced its participation in a joint study agreement with ADNOC and other Japanese partners to explore the commercial potential of blue ammonia production in the UAE.

Fertiglobe, a 58:42 partnership between OCI and ADNOC, will produce blue ammonia at its Fertil plant in the Ruwais Industrial Complex in Abu Dhabi to be delivered to INPEX in Japan.

Ammonia can be used as a low-carbon fuel across industrial applications, including transportation, power generation, refining, and industries.

For Japan, hydrogen and its carrier fuels, such as blue ammonia, are expected to contribute to the country’s industrial decarbonisation target.
