Oman cancels 3rd mobile licence bid, names local operator

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Omani Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) on Wednesday announced the cancellation of a bid for the third  mobile phone network licence, for which the Saudi Telecom Company (STC) had submitted an offer.

The TRA sent a notification to STC indicating that the bid for third mobile phone licence project has been canceled, STC said in a filing to the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul).

The TRA gave the third operator award to a local company, whose ownership includes a number of investment funds and a foreign partner, the statement showed but did not name the winner.

Earlier this year, the Omani TRA had called on companies from neighbouring GCC members to bid for its third mobile licence.

Among the top contenders for the licence were Saudi Arabia’s STC, the UAE’s Etisalat, and Sudan’s Sudatel.
