National Cinema to launch 3 Dolby theatres in Kuwait

Mubasher: Kuwait National Cinema has signed a deal with Dolby Laboratories to launch three Dolby Cinema theatres in Kuwait.

The Dolby theatres will be the first in the Gulf country, the US-based cinema maker said, noting that the first theatre was expected to be opened in 360 Mall in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Kuwait National Cinema will be operating under the Cinescape brand.

The theatres are the latest addition to Dolby's portfolio after it announced upcoming openings with Odeon in the UK and Kinopolis in Germany, Dolby said in a statement.

In the Middle East, Dolby has theatres in Egypt, Bahrain, and the UAE.

Dolby Laboratories senior vice president of the Cinema Business Group Doug Darrow said he was pleased with the upcoming openings, highlighting that they were part of the company's strategy to expand its footprint in Europe and the Middle East.

"Each Dolby Cinema is equipped with the Dolby Vision laser projection system which delivers high dynamic range with enhanced color technology and a contrast ratio which far exceeds anything on the market today," Dolby said in its statement.

It added that the result was "a dramatically different viewing experience that presents strikingly vivid and realistic images, making viewers feel like they are inside the movie's world."

Kuwait National Cinema last reported a 20% drop in profits to KWD 2.58 million ($8.57 million) in Q1-18 from KWD 3.23 million ($10.73 million) in the same period of 2017, on the back of lower revenues.
